Antonie Robertson \/ The National<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"margin-xs-top hidden_md hidden_sm\">\n<p class=\"image-metadata\"><span style=\"color: initial;\">The UAE and Kenya have concluded negotiations for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/11\/25\/uae-and-philippines-seek-to-strengthen-economic-relations-amid-cepa-discussions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comprehensive economic partnership agreement\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: initial;\">(Cepa) in a \u201clandmark\u201d deal that will provide further access to the high-growth African continent and expansion into sectors from food to technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"advanced-grid-3 layout-section main2 \">\n<article id=\"\" class=\"default__ArticleBody-sc-1jtxuc8-4 gFNdLh custom-article-body-wrapper article-type--standard \">\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">The two trading partners will seek to tap into opportunities in sectors including food production, mining, technology and logistics,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/climate\/cop28\/2023\/12\/04\/uaes-cepas-opening-new-pathways-to-green-investment-minister-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi<\/a>, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, said in a post on X on Friday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container-print media-embed\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><span style=\"color: initial;\">\u201cIt is a landmark deal with one of the continent&#8217;s most dynamic economies, offering new avenues for growth on both sides,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">\u201cAn access point into a high-growth region, Kenya is already a major partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcad-container\">\n<div id=\"arcad_419\" class=\"arcad ad-1x1\"><span style=\"color: initial;\">In 2023, the UAE and Kenya&#8217;s non-oil trade rose 26.4 per cent year on year to $3.1 billion, Dr Al Zeyoudi said.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">This latest pact is the UAE&#8217;s third Cepa with an African country. In December, it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/12\/28\/uae-and-republic-of-the-congo-finalise-terms-of-cepa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concluded the terms of a deal<\/a>\u00a0with Mauritius and with the Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">The UAE has already concluded Cepas with India, Israel, Indonesia, Turkey, Georgia, Cambodia, Colombia, South Korea and Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">In 2023, the UAE\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/12\/23\/uae-and-mauritius-finalise-terms-of-cepa-deal-to-boost-trade-and-investment-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">non-oil foreign trade\u00a0<\/a>hit a record Dh3.5 trillion ($953 billion), bolstered by its economic diversification plans, as the Arab world&#8217;s second-largest economy signed a series of Cepas with major economies around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">The pact comes a few days before the UAE hosts the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2024\/01\/19\/wto-head-global-trade-to-recover-in-2024-but-geopolitical-tensions-threaten-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Trade Organisation&#8217;s\u00a0<\/a>13th Ministerial Conference, which faces the tough task of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2024\/02\/22\/wtos-top-level-meeting-in-abu-dhabi-seeks-reform-amid-divisions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brokering key trade agreements,\u00a0<\/a>on Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcad-container\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">Kenya&#8217;s real gross domestic product growth rose to an estimated 5 per cent in 2023, from 4.8 per cent in 2022. The African economy is projected to achieve growth that is between 4.5 per cent and 5.2 per cent in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">The UAE-Kenya Cepa will hasten investment flows in high potential areas such as logistics, health care, travel, tourism, infrastructure and information communications technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">It will help small and medium enterprises to expand, the UAE&#8217;s Ministry of Foreign Trade said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">In terms of stimulating tourism, Kenya earlier announced it had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/travel\/2023\/12\/18\/travel-news-dubai-abu-dhabi-kenya-maldives-neom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped visa requirements<\/a>\u00a0for all visitors from around the world from January this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">The services sector, which accounts for 53.6 per cent of Kenya\u2019s gross domestic product, and its agriculture sector, which comprises about a quarter of national GDP, offer \u201cvast potential\u201d for UAE businesses seeking to expand into Africa, the Ministry of Foreign Trade said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">The deal marks a \u201ca new chapter of trade relations\u201d between the two countries that will secure vital East and West supply chains, spur investment into priority sectors and boost market access for Emirati and Kenyan businesses, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">\u201cThe UAE-Kenya CEPA will not only boost trade and investment, but also foster innovation and sustainable growth in key sectors such as agriculture, technology and tourism,\u201d Dr Al Zeyoudi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">\u201cWe look forward to deepening our relationship with Kenya and to further expanding our presence in Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">Rebecca Miano, Kenya\u2019s Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry, said the African nation had identified trade as a \u201ckey lever\u201d of its economic growth and transformation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">\u201cWe are on a national development path that is seeking to increase industrial output, enhance the quality and global competitiveness of that output, and to expand the opportunities for its export,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1jtxuc8-1 jQghZF body-paragraph\">\u201cThe comprehensive economic partnership agreement with the [UAE] will play a key role in these efforts, enabling our exports to reach important markets in Asia and the Middle East, and also in stimulating the investment inflows that will further develop our national capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenya is one of Africa&#8217;s most dynamic economies, offering both parties new opportunities for growth, Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi says The UAE and Kenya have concluded negotiations for a comprehensive economic partnership agreement\u00a0(Cepa) in a \u201clandmark\u201d deal that will provide further access to the high-growth African continent and expansion into sectors from food to technology.
